Kuffiyeh

This series explores ways in which meaning transforms based on the perception of the viewer in time and space while also shedding light on the impossibility of totalizing and concretizing meaning.

The kuffiyeh’s pattern is used due to their controversial symbolic meaning and it’s ability to exist in opposing narratives. Its meaning is based on the perspective of the viewer, their beliefs, place in history and connection to the political narratives. In the installation the repetition and distortion of its patterns are representative of constant transformability of meaning: every iteration is different, exactitude doesn’t exist.

Through the artwork’s structure and materiality I actively engage the viewer in discovering their entanglement in the interpretation of the artwork while finding harmony in the synthesis of opposites; light and shadow, repetition and distortion, passive vs active participation, inner and outer world.
